MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE AND TRADITIONAL CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE FOR THE TREATMENT OF FEMALE INFERTILITY

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine can have an important role in the treatment of infertility. Preliminary medical studies indicate that acupuncture can increase blood flow to the uterus, and stimulate ovulation. Studies also indicate a beneficial effect of the use of herbs. Acupuncture and herbal treatment may therefore serve as an important adjunct to Western Biomedical treatments and procedures.

Chinese Medicine attempts to understand the clinical manifestations associated with infertility. The presence of symptoms seemingly unrelated to fertility such as backache, fatigue, blurred vision, dizziness, ringing in the ears, depression, anxiety, feeling hot or cold, frequency of urination, and thirst are relevant. Issues surrounding menstruation such as frequency and duration of menses, color of menstrual blood and presence of clots, vaginal discharge, mid-cycle pain, painful periods and premenstrual tension are also important in attempting to understand and treat infertility using Medical Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine.

Treatment is ideally given for a period of three to six months prior to attempting conception. When pregnancy is attempted or confirmed the treatment is stopped.
