Who is Dr.Schulman?
Dr. Schulman
began his study of the human body in
1978 at the Naropa Institute in
Boulder
Colorado.
At that time, he was involved in
Ensemble Theater, Modern, and
Post-Modern Dance. He studied Tai Chi
Chuan with Jane and Bataan Faigo,
students of Professor Chen Man Cheng. He
obtained a BA in Dance and Theater.

Dr. Schulman's exploration then led him
to NYC, where he studied most of the
major modern dance techniques.
Following this, he entered a period of
exploration of Body Therapy methods,
spending several years in
Santa Fe, New Mexico. Dr. Schulman
completed a one year, 1000 hour American
Massage Therapy Association program, and
the following year studied myofascial
release methods (similar to Rolfing).
While in
Santa Fe,
he began teaching Tai Chi Chuan, and
founded the
Santa Fe
Academy
of Tai Chi Chuan.
At this point Dr. Schulman recognized
the importance of classical medical
training, and subsequently graduated
from the Medical College of Wisconsin
in 1991. While an Intern at Hartford
Hospital Dr. Schulman attended the
Introduction to Manual Medicine course
at the Michigan State University College
of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Schulman trained in PM&R at New
York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center,
receiving Board Certification in May
of 1996. The medical specialty of
Physiatry (PM&R) includes study of the
peripheral nervous system, the
musculoskeletal system, and
Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Care of
persons with illness such as stroke,
traumatic brain injury, spinal cord
injury, amputation, neck and back pain,
sports injuries, arthritis, neuropathy
(nerve disease) and myopathy (muscle
disease) are part of the training.
Dr. Schulman is presently New York
Presbyterian Hospital as a Clinical
Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation
Medicine, and the Center for
Complementary and Integrative Medicine,
Weill Medical College of Cornell
University. He is also an
Assistant Attending Physiatrist,
New York
Cornell
Medical
Center.

In June of 1996, Dr. Schulman began the
study of acupuncture with Dr. Joseph
Helms through the UCLA/David Geffen
School of Medicine/Helms Medical
Institute Medical Acupuncture for
Physicians program. In May of 1997,
he completed the 300 hours required by
the State of
New York for Physician Certification in
the practice of Acupuncture. He is
Board Certified by, and a Fellow
of, the
American Academy of Medical Acupuncture,
the largest physician only acupuncture
organization in the
United States.

Dr. Schulman has served as an
Instructor and Clinical Preceptor
with the UCLA/David Geffen School
of Medicine/Helms Medical Institute
Medical Acupuncture for Physicians
program since 1997. He is presently
teaching advanced acupuncture for pain

Dr. Schulman been in private practice
in
Manhattan
since February 1997. In May of 1998, he
was appointed Medical Director of
the Center for Holistic Medicine
at
United
Hospital
in Port Chester, New York, a position
he held for one year. He served on the
Board of Directors of the
American Academy of Medical Acupuncture
for three years, and presently serves on
the Board of the American Board of
Medical Acupuncture. He also served
on the Board of Directors of the
Stephen Petronio Dance Company
three years.
Dr. Schulman studied Traditional
Chinese Herbal Medicine at the
Tri-state College of Traditional Chinese
Medicine in
New York City,
completing a 500 hour program in 2001.
Dr. Schulman has lectured and written
extensively. He is the Guest Editor
of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Clinics of North America, November 1999
Edition, "Complementary Medicine in
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation."
He is the author of “Solve it With
Supplements” a book on the topic of
western herbs and nutritional
supplements, that will be published by
Rodale Press this spring (2005). |
